Hello all I am currently looking to purchase a wind instrument and need advice. I am looking to buy the Raymarine ST60 Plus at $870. Any opinions about this model and other brands...I see the Simrad has the IS15 at $1,230 and IS12 at $650 units. What about others? What are quality units and what makes such a big difference in the price of these. On my old boat, the units were Standard Horizon and they were very picky and not saticfying to say the least... My boat currently has Raytheon (Raymarine) depth and speed that function well for now. Eventually I may change them. Thanks! Greg

compatibility

Sounds like you aren't planning an imminent purchase of speed and depth instruments yet. Someone else can verify compatibiliity but if you intend to get TRUE wind, you'll need to integrate the purchase with the existing speed log and I doubt anything else will work with your existing stuff

Forward thinking

I want to buy something now that I will / can build around if need be. I do not want to buy to be compatible with what is there. So I will consider another brand with the intention to replace the other instruments to have a better all-around system. While I am not a millionare, I want to get the best for my money. You get what you pay for in quality. Greg

Instrument choices.

Take a look at the instrument choices at Performance Yacht. I have a Nexus system and really like it. It is now ComNav but totally compatible. I especially like the Multi-display and the digital wind display. One wire and everything daisy-chains: display to display and display to autopilot, etc. But PYacht has lots of choices for comparison.

Greg - As Ed mentioned, you'll be able to 'daisy-chain' your instruments as you add in the future. This is great, and may save $$ as well as eliminating clutter, but if my understanding of the thing is correct, in order to do this you're limited to one family or brand of gear. Apparently different manufacturers use different "languages" and a component from one may not be able to "talk" to components from other manufacturers despite their all being advertised as meeting the same NMEA interface standard. Check this out. One big consideration for me would be the availability of customer support for whatever you buy. If you buy only on the basis of price, say from a big-box outlet or some budget mail-order source, it is very unlikely that you'll ever get any intelligent advice should you run into problems or have questions. True, all the manufacturers offer on-line or phone-in tech. support, but if my recent experience with a Magellan GPS is an example, some of this "support" doesn't amount to much except advertising copy. Magellan didn't answer my e-mails and phone inquiries were answered by a heavily accented voice that I suspect originated from a call center in India and, more importantly, couldn't seem to understand my questions, let alone answer them. Very frustrating.

I had a Navman wind instrument

on our last boat and loved it. I planned to replace my instruments this year with Navman wind and multi, but apparently they are being rebranded Northstar, and in the few weeks since I started looking, have seemingly disappeared from the market. I had seen some of the new Northstar Explorer 310 series, which was the Navman 3100 series a few weeks ago, but they seem to be gone now. I am not sure if it is part of phasing one out and the other in, or what, but if they are in fact available, I give it a strong recommendation - the wind instrument was priced below $400 which made it attractive as well.

integrated or stand alone?

Greg: These higher priced units are usually designed to work with an integrated system. If you are not going to have a "system" then you should look into some other options. The Navman (or whatever has replaced it) is a good unit, there are some others on the market too. Shop on ebay, they have some of these insturments at cheaper prices. You can purchase the Raymarine ST60 system for about $1500 (wind, speed, depth etc). There is also Comnav (aka Nexus) and several others. You need decide on a budget and what you are ultimately looking for.

Got a NAVMAN

I added a NAVMAN Wind 3100 1+ years ago and so far so good. Sometimes the MAX Wind is unrealistic but I think that is some spike caused by turning on the auothelm or something. I only regret I didn't get the multi-instrument package at the time especially now that they are becoming Northstar. As it is my old datamarine knotmeter has since died and the depthfinder is a fishfinder(although I like the history of the graph.) The repeater would be great to have too. Price is important for me but I understand you get what you pay for (that's got to have a 'text' acronym--ygwypf?) Anyway, I couldn't get it to read my GPS and frankly I was happy with the helpful folks I talked too. The tech remained helpful even as my temperature rose. He guided me to the problem by suggesting a few things to check. It defaulted to looking for speed through the water rather than SOG that the GPS was providing. The included manual glossed over this just a bit too much for me to notice. I hope these folks are still working there. I like the display with big numbers and nice illumination. Sailing on the wind is fun too. My wiring harness is looking pretty ugly but I too want to be flexible regarding what I purchase. But a hogpodge of instruments my be a downer at resale time. Cheers, HughR Oh yeah, the under $400 was good and it has also held up to some pretty fierce winds out here in the SE Washington Desert--We had 100mph over Christmas--mast head unit still there. The sparfly is gone.

Check the web first....

.... the price you indicate seems WAY high. I just did a quick search and saw a price around $450. Sea Talk has worked very well for me Jeff

wireless, no moving parts

Hi Greg, If I were in the market for a wind instrument (which I am not) I would pick either something wireless like the TackTick, or somthing without moving parts (wind cups) like the new Maretron units http://www.maretron.com/products/wso100.php This way it may work longer than a year or two! Let me know how it works out, maybe I will be in the market. My new boat has a Standard Horizon unit that displays the wind direction, but the speed readout is stuck at 0. Barry

Jeff, are you saying $450 for the Raymarine?

If so, where was that? Are you sure it wasn't display only?
