I'd like to add a wind instument this year. The mast has a cable and attachment for a wind instrument that I believe was factory installed. Does anyone have any information on what system this was for? I already removed the bracket because I assume whatever it was for is no longer available (but could easily replace it if I'm wrong). The cable is still in place and could be used to pull a new cable. I am thinking about a Raymarine unit since I use a C80 display but I am also seriously considering a Tack Tick wireless system for ease of installation and no electical hookups. I understand the battery in these units are now replacable. Any advice or comments?

I just removed mine this year and replaced with the Raymarine ST60. Installed and it works beautifully with no adjustments. The old unit was a Data Marine and was an all in one unit that had a main control with wind, depth and speed. The depth and speed were already replaced with Raymarine units, so I ripped the rest of the data marine stuff out (old) and replaced it. It was easy to run the cable down the mast. I attached the new cable to the old one from the top and pulled it through. There were a few times it get held up, but I would just work it and eventually it can right through. The transducer mounts on top of the mast easily. Used on of the existing holes and had to only drill one. If your mast is up, this would be easier with two people. I replaced the pedestal guard with a 1.25" guard and have the c80 mounted in a Navpod - the guard is already full of wires and I don't think I could get another through. The bulkhead has Data Marine speed and depth displays and the Ray would not fit in vey well with them. The Tack Tick display could go just about anywhere since it does require wiring. I have no problem bringing a cable down the mast.

The mast head mount looks like Datamarine. Parts are still available for these units from DMI Marine in MA. As for Tack Tic stay away. Because they are wireless they are very, very, very sensitive to lightning and I'm not talking direct hits. A guy near me last year was anchored on his boat when lightning stuck a tree on an island about 1/8 of a mile away. His Tack Tic units were instantly fried when not one other wired item on his boat was affected. He quickly sent them back to tack tic and was told "sorry this is lightning damage"...... I don't know why the wireless is more affected than wired for non direct hits but it is! The Raymarine ST 60 unit is a good one. I've had two on two separate boats with not one issue.....
