I have a Hunter 31 1985. I would like to add a Wind Instrument with the display located at the pedestal. Does any one have any insight or advice they could share? I am particularly interested in the proper way to run the wires inside the mast. Does it require removing the mast? Thanks in advance.

Probably the best solution.

Al: We presently have a defunct wind instrument that we are planning on replacing. I think that dropping the mast is the best way to do this. In the delta area, they are charging about $150 to do this, but I think there will be a saving on the labor for running the wire and mounting the instrument. We are actually going to replace all of the instruments on our H'31 in the next few weeks. PS: Be sure to have the tube sealed while the mast is down and be sure that they put a drip loop in the wires.

Steve, replacing?

Steve, are you replacing the Nexus? Or finally finishing the install? The wiring is one problem. Mounting the transducer on top and getting the wire into the mast is another. I guess it could be done with the mast up but it would be really difficult. How do you get the wire through the deck and down to the bilge? P.S. I am writing this on my laptop in a motel in Gainesville, FL. Tomorrow morning I will take the Hunter plant tour. Report to follow.

Not the Nexus

Ed: It's not the Nexus that I am replacing but the original Navico (circa 1987). I never got the boat pulled last year, so the instrument installation was put on hold. Wife is now on my --- to get it done in the next few weeks. So, I guess I'm going to do it in the next few weeks. I see how you are trying to relax in your retirement. Looking at new boats and thinking about living in that warm weather. Wish I was there!!!

same project for me too

I bought a wind instrument. There has never been any wind sensors on top of my mast. Not sure how I will do it, but I guess the following (and obvious) options exist. 1. buy a mast ladder or use a bosuns chair and deal with the precarious installation at the top of a 40 foot mast. 2. Have the yard drop the mast, then do the installation myself. 3. Pay the yard to do it (which I hope not to do) My question is, how does one run a wire down (or up) a mast. Is there a procedure for this?

Remove the mast

I installed a wind instrument on my 280 this winter. If your setup is anything like mine I would recommend that you not even consider the installation with the mast up. You probably have a PVC conduit inside your mast to run the wires thru. See the picture. You will need to run the wires from the top of the mast down, because they are permanently connected to the base of the masthead sending unit. There should be a messanger line(string) inside the conduit to allow you to pull the wires thru more easily. Be sure to also pull a new string thru when you pull the wires.

I also have a 1985 Hunter 31 and its mast is made by Isomat. I would be very suprized if yours is not Isomat, im pretty sure that all the B&R rigs used on the Hunter 31s where made by Isomat see the link to go to thier site. Jim
