Does anyone out there have trouble with keeping their Raymarine wind instrument calibrated? I have a Hunter 33 with Raymarine wind instruments. Ever since I had the boat new 2 years ago the wind direction indication have been off. I follow the calibration procedures to put in the bias angle to correct the readout but the next time it is off again. The error is in the order of 10-20 degrees. I was told initially that this may be a problem with the windvane set screw being loose. I had some one climb the mast to tighten it and it seemed alright for a while but the boat always seem to sail better on one tack than the other tack. I attribute that to the wind instrument not being dead center. Lately, it is reading off by 20 or so degrees again(compared to the windex indicator). Can the set screw come loose again? Would appreciate any similar experiences and possible fixes. Thanks.

True or Apparent?

Is it possible you're reading true from the instrument while your windvane shows apparent? Also how does your compass connect to your wind reading. We are just about a hair under 20 degrees off from true in this part of the world. Coincidence?

My RM ST 50 does same thing

and loses the correction once power is removed. So, I just re-set it every time we sail.

Troubleshooting Instruments

Contact Raymarine, they will help you troubleshoot your problem. I found that if you call them on their 800 number you get a faster responce than if you ask throught the website Velero

Probably an internal battery died.

Most instruments have an internal battery to maintain the calibration settings. When this battery goes, the instrument will forget everything that is programmed into it whenever it is shut off (look at your computers CMOS battery). Typically, this battery is soldered in, but it may be just plugged in in the Raynav. Tiyr best bet is to take the instrument to a local electronics shop. They will be able to repair it faster and less expensively than Raymarine can. Steve Alchemist
