winches

I sail a Oday 20 with small Gibb winches, there seems to some play up and down on them. Should I attemp to take them apart and grease them, or leave well enough alone

Yes, it is not hard...

Take them apart abd let the gears soak in gas over night. Take pictures as you take the apart. I helps put them back together.
