Need to replace the stripper rings on a Lewmar 40 self tailing winch. The top cover is supposed to slide out by hand- mine appears to be too tight. Is there a tool that can be used to unscrew the top cover ?

Thank you.

Chisel it out with a screw driver against the V notch indent?

I thought that could work, was afraid it could jam it more. Could try tapping it gently. Would you recommend a lubricant spray?

Do what ken suggests. Only once have I seen one that I could not get open by pressing my palm down on it and turning. Wrap the top of a flat screwdriver in some cloth and gently tap it counter-clockwise with a hammer to get it started.

I've used a short piece of 1x2 pine in lieu of a screwdriver or chisel, couple taps should break it free, with less chance of marring.

sounds like they need to be completely replaced, e-mail me for shipping information and I will exchange with my non-s/t?

Plastic or Wood, are good first choices. If that doesn't get it, then move to brass, it will not mar the surface....the brass will better transfer you tapping forces. PB Blaster saturation, a couple of taps to help the liquids to disperse/move and a good 24hr soak are good for helping free things up.

can anyone confirm this as RH or LH threaded cap? Righty-tight and all that as well.

counterclockwise to remove top. It's easy once you see the winch. You can only use a tool to remove the top. The grooves shape prevents tool-tightening.

Yes, this is the same. Appreciate all your suggestions. Will try and follow up.
