Hello, I've come across a very clean looking Hunter 19. I'm a bit confused because the pictures on the listing don't show winches on her deck. I also can't find manuals or other resources on that boat, since it appears it hasn't been produced since '96. Thanks in advance for any info.

Cesar, They might not be needed on a boat that

size. We have a H26 and it just barely needs winches. Ray S/V Speedy

I agree

Two boats ago I had a 18 footer with a jib and only had cleats to manage the jib. Unless you have alot more head sail than normal, I wouldn't think you need winches either.

Only winch is halyard (on the mast)

The H19 really doesn't require jib sheet winches. You may want to upgrade the sheet cleats to Spinlock PXs. This is a project I have lined up for this year. The PXs seem to be a bit easier to handle than the standard cam cleats. I'll try to get the manual scanned in and uploaded to the web this week. Is your email addresses in the owners list?

Thanks!

Thanks, folks. I'm quite close to getting into this boat, so I may be back for more insight. Happy sailing..

Follow-up Question

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and bought the H-19 and believe the winch handle may be missing. I'm shopping for a replacement but don't know the specs. Does anybody out there know this? Thanks in advance.

May not need a handle

Cesar, I believe the winch is a Lewmar 6 or 7. If you have the hand/arm strength and dexterity to operate the winch with a handle, you can most likely hoist the sails without one. A couple of wraps on the winch usually offers all of the mechanical advantage you will need. You will find that the 19 is a tough little boat, but most all systems operate with ease. Probably the toughest task is raising the rudder, which may require a boathook to grab it with.
