I'm looking at purchasing a 2003 Hunter 356 but it has both winches mounted on the cabin top. I'm wondering what the reason is for that and do you have problems single-handed sailing. It seems you would have to leave the helm station to attack the boat or adjust the headsail. Any answers would be helpful thank you

we normally use the "tack" function on the autopilot so we can go forward and work the jib winches when single-handing. However, I sometimes lead the jibsheets aft to the spinnaker winches which are near the helm

Hi -

I have a H36, and also have been on a 356 at my yacht club. The sheet winch locations are one of a couple key differences between the 2 boats - which are otherwise identical.

The winch location was moved back to the helm on the H36 based on user feedback - but this is a highly personal preference. Some folks find the rear position to be crowded at the helm, while others like the ease of single-handing - so you need to decide based on your personal preference.

One other difference between the 2 models is the fridge/freezer setup - the 356 has top loading, while the 36 has front opening. We like (love) the front opening - but again this is a highly personal preference and debating religion might be an easier topic !! (But not in this forum).

Good luck with your decision !

Steve, we have a 2003, H356. We usually have two of us in the cockpit but on occasion I use the autopilot to tack when alone. The small jib is easily handled and it tacks quickly. I have thought about adding a couple of Lewmars to the coamings when I see them on sale but in the end have been happy to sail her as is. There is a mod in the H356 section of this web site for a fellow that has moved the mainsheet back to the helm using blocks. I moved from a small boat to this bigger boat and found I do a lot less adjusting than I did on the smaller boats, so it has worked out much less of an issue than I thought it might be. She sails very well, has huge amount of storage and makes for a comfortable liveaboard (we are on her 5 months at a time). On my profile page I have a photo album with lots of pictures of how our boat is setup, storage space, engine access etc. We really like the boat and think it was the best choice for us.
good luck, Bob

I have the same same winch set up on my 386. I believe the reason for it is to eliminate sheets in the cockpit. I have no problem single handling with the aid of the autopilot. When I run the spinnaker I run the sheets through a block tied to the arch to a cabin winch
