Hunter 23 WIll be at a Navy base
I had a Marina mount the hardware to run my main halyard to the cockpit on a Hunter 23. I gave them the pictures from this site, but of course they did not follow them. They mounted the turning block a couple inches forward of the mast instead of even or behind. The consequences of that is that I need to still go to the mast and winch the sail the rest of the way up. It was suggested to take the winch off the mast. I can get it off and not leave holes in the mast but the mount will remain but I do not need it. My question is what is the best way to mount the winch back on the cockpit? Also, I have a compass mounted in the fiberglass through the cabin wall. It is shot and needs to be replaced. Anyone have any idea of where I can get a cheap compass or a good used one. If I spend any more money on this boat this year my wife is going to sink it with me in it. I paid one bill for $3,000 to get a bunch of repairs done. Not one was major but they all totaled up to big bucks. New rub rail mounting material all the way around gets very expensive for starters.

Mine was supposed to look like that but, I bought a turning block like yours, however they said it would not fit. I ended up with a stack block. However,
your turning block looks to be about the same position as mine a little forward of the mast. Do you have a winch on the stern to help get the sail the last few inches? If so, how and where did you mount it? Unless I use the mast mounted winch my sails are not tight and they just luff at the tailing edge. Also you have 2 blocks and two lines one is the main halyard and the other is the ?

Thanks for the picture and advice.

Hi there, if you wish, check out my album to see how I led my lines aft. Halyards on the starboard, and outhaul/topping lift on the port. Here's a link to one of the pictures:

Hi, the photo shown is for the Main and Jib Halyard. The lines go aft along the cabin top to a sheet stopper (or clutch) then the winch:

I used the winch that was supposed to go on the mast. I cut a rectangle of carpet out on the inside of the cabin and mounted a fairly thick aluminum backing plate for the winch and stopper:

As Crazy Dave will tell you, use caution here, as the balsa wood core in the coach top is compressible and doesn't like water leakage. I believe the technique is to drill the top (outer) holes, dig out the balsa wood, fill with epoxy, and continue the holes through the epoxy after it sets?

You can see more titled pics in my album, click on my name, then "view public profile", then on the right side is my album. Leading lines aft sure makes life easier.

Look at the pictures of mine in my profile. Relocated main halyard winch. Cheek block on deck and turning block at mast base. Added a line clutch forward of my relocated winch. Charles
