Howdy HOW Folks, I am interested in upsizing/upgrading at least one one of the halyard winches aboard Endless Summer (1983 h31). Now we have two cabin top Barlow 20 winches for this purpose. We use the starboard winch to lift the RIB dink to the fore deck, and to lift someone up the mast. We want a more powerful winch and self tailing one. Anyone have any ideas? Have any of you made this upgrade? We are looking at a Harken B16STA or B32.2STA or Lewmar 16A or 30A. Thanks, Roger and Susie Mummah, Endless Summer, www.cruisingendlesssummer.com

Halyard Winch Sizes

I installed two Harken 16ST,s on my 28.5 several years ago and although they're adequate for the halyards they are not two speed and I would never want to crank someone up the mast with one that small. I can run a halyard past the cabintop 16 ST (almost as a turning block) and back to a primary winch and use a 10" handle to crank someone up the mast safely. Why not look at your present winch ratios and compare to the upgrade sizes you are thinking of. Note that the 16's are 16:1 while the Lewmar 30 has a 30:1 on it's second speed and the Harken 32 has 32:1 on it's second speed. I think the two speed winches are far more flexible.

Roger: I would suggest that you look at the Anderson S.S. 28. Proabably the best buy for a new winch in your (retired) price range. I think that you will find that they compete favorably with the Harken and should be a little less expensive (you will be able to purchase some highter quality gin & tonic for your sweet wife that is hauling and supporting your dying ass <g>)
