Winch strap broke. What "rating" is required for new strap or cable? If boat weighs 3400 lbs, shouldn't cable/strap be rated higher?

They tend to rot from exposure to the sun. I cut off the exposed ~18" of mine every year.

Not sure about the rating, as you aren't exactly suspending the weight of the boat. You could get a cable winch if you're really concerned.

On a side note, I installed a safety chain on mine that runs from the upright on the trailer and uses a clevis to connect to the eye. It's a back-up security measure, but I feel good having it...especially after my strap broke on the way home from buying the boat.
