I have read that you should service your winches every season. I just got my 1992 H28 and it seems the jib sheet winches need to be serviced. The winches are Barient Model 21 and Barient is no longer in bussiness. Is this a hard job? Does anyone know where to get spare parts? Are the pawls standard?

winches

You probably just need to clean and grease the winches. This involves taking them apart, not losing the small parts, cleaning them, greasing them, and re-assembling them. Use only marine winch grease. Check the archives for complete instructions, or look up in a boat maintenance book.

Save all parts

Be sure to find a small cardboard box that you can cut a circular hole in the bottom and put over the winch as you work. That way as the parts go boing from springs, they should land in the box and not the drink. One of the problems with replacing a part lost overboard is wondering what it looked like as it soared through the air.

Bill is right on...

with the cardboard box suggestion. This has saved me from lost parts. It it also a handy place for tools, grease etc. while servicing the winches... Joe S/V Charis

Cardboard box improvement ???

In addition (if you're not already doing this), after cutting the hole in the bottom for the winch, cut a hole in each end of the box (one for each arm) and then put Saran Wrap (or something similar) over the top of the box. Depending on how tight the holes in the ends fit your arms, nothing will get out. What you've made is a DIY glovebox.
