I am a new owner of an O’Day 222 and have encountered a winch that is frozen. The make and model is a Barlow 15, one speed. I have a service information sheet that gives a detailed description of parts and method to dissemble except the very first step. There is a spring loaded black plastic button that must be removed to access the hex head screw to take the whole thing apart. How do you get the plastic cover out of the center of the wench?

Twist Lock?

Sometimes those things have a bayonet base that goes in, depresses to load the spring and then makes a quarter turn to either left or right to lock it into the base. If you have not already, push down on it and try twisting it one way or the other to see if it unlocks.

Barlow winches

Check the archives. Search "Barlow Winches" and you'll find a lot of info on them.

It's been about 6 years since I sold my 222 but..

and I could be totally wrong but it seems to me you simply pushed down on the black spring assembly and pulled up on the winch drum. No harm in trying that. Be careful for pieces to spring out.
