Winch Removal

I'd like to service the winches this winter on my '89 Hunter 30. The two primary winches in the cockpit certainly turn slow and the cabin top winch appears to be shot. I removed the bolts and washers from underneath the cabin top winch but there appears to be more holding the winch in place (I didn't want to force anything). Does anyone know the procedure for removing the winches? Additionally, does anyone know where to find instructions for servicing the winches? Thanks. Alan

winches

I wouldn't remove them fronm the boat they are beded in place. Unless your ready to rebed. They really rebuild very easy & quickly. If they have never been rebuilt make sure you clean them well.

rebuild

You can buy winch rebuild kits from the manufacturer or from West Marine or BoatUS, etc. As Rod said, they are bedded to the deck and would be a hassle to remove so leave them on the deck. If the winches have needle bearings it will be an easier job than if they are ball bearings. Just be careful not to lose any parts and make sure they go back together right. Get a diagram or make your own as you disassemble them. Clean the parts in a can of solvent and reassemble with WINCH grease, not just any old automotive grease. Its really not too bad of a job, and you need to learn how. Good luck.

opening up a winch

I think what you are asking is how to take the drum off the winch. There is a circular clip around the top of the drum where the handle goes in. It looks something like a small slinky. pull out one end of this clip and then unwind it around the drum to remove it. You should then be able to pull the drum off and clean and service the winch. No need to unbolt it from the deck. Watch out for small pieces when you remove the drum. David Krozier H-27 Renegade

Taking drum off winch

I have an H 28.5 and have the same questions. I have taken off/cleaned the cabin top winch without a problem but never was able to get the drum off the cockpit winches. Should be simple but I don't see anything locking it on...
