winch removal from mast/rigging setup

I purchased an O'Day that had been out of the water for 16 years. The winch at the base of the mast is froze-up and will not turn. It needs to be replaced. Looking inside the mast I can see screws holding on the base. How do I get to these screws/get the drum off? It is a Barlow 15. The rigging, standing and running was stuffed into a box. Anyone know where I can get a diagram, photos, or a manual that shows the rigging configuration for sailing. This would be a great help.

Winch Rebuild

The winch can be rebuilt without removing the base from the mast. You will have to take it apart anyway to get it off even if you would just prefer to replace it ($$$). The other end of the bolts you see inside the mast are inside the winch. Chances are if you clean it and re-lube it, everything will work again.Look for a circlip underneath the splined part of the winch. Once removed, the drum should slip off and the bearings and ratchet mechanism will be visible.You are going to need that winch if your boat still has the original wire luff jib and small drum furler. If the boat has been converted to a CDI furler, which is what I think Rudy would recommend if you need new sails, then you won't need the winch anymore.The 192 is a great little boat, I think you will enjoy it.

Winch removal

If there is no visible retaining clip, then you can try the following: Push the button at the bottom of the winch handle socket, and pull up on the winch drum at the same time. That's how the original winches come off on my 1984 O'Day 26. I can't remember it they're Barlows or not.
