It seeems that I need to rebuild the winches on our "new" 1981 H-33. Does anyone know if there are kits for a rebuild? Instructions? The boat is 6 hours away so I can't even look up the make/model on the net. Apparently, it is the "port #10" that is the priority. Thanks, Scott

Save Your Parts!

Be careful not to drop any parts over the side. They can spring out on you. Take a box, like a beer case (cans) and cut a hole in the bottom that is the size of the winch. Set it over the winch. If any parts drop, then they will fall into the box (and not you-know-where). Sorry that I can't help with the type/model, but good luck! :)

H-33 Winches

Scott, Our '81 H-33 and a sister ship I know of had Barient winches. So they were probably "standard" in 81. Two #22 sheet winches and I thnk a #10 on the cabin top for haliards, Try http://www.arco-winches.com/barient.html for info and parts, they have disassembly info at the link below.

My Winch Rebuild

Several years ago I rebuilt the winches on my 1970 Catalina 22. They were Barlows, but I don't know the size. I used the Harken rebuild kit from West Marine, which consisted of extra pawls and springs, and bearing lubricant. I left the winch base in place and took the drum off. Parts were pretty dirty and the springs either broke or were mangled. I cleaned the bearings and other parts with mineral spirits (denatured alcohol does not work). Once they were clean, the original pawls looked ever so slightly shorter than the Harkens, but they didn't look too worn, so I reused them. I did replace all the springs, relubed the bearings, and reassembled. They have worked fine ever since.

Lewmar

My 82-33 has Lewmar winches. I purchased winch tun up kits from West Marine with springs, pawls etc. Very easy to do. As others have mentioned, take care not to loose anything over the side. I lost pieces over the side becasue of everything was sticky and gummed up and needed a little bit of persuasion. Fortuantely I could dive down to find them in 10 ft of water in sand.
