Hi everyone. I need some advice on a winch problem. I’ve attached photo of our mainsail winch in the mast. It was immovable until we sprayed lub in it. After that it moved slightly and stopped. The problem I am having is I don’t see any way to get it off the mast to refurb it. There are no screws or retaining rings I can find. Any advice would be great.

once you remove the drum, you will get access to the screws/bolts holding it to the mast. There should be a retaining ring or screw on the top inside the handle hole. I've found blow-up parts diagrams of Barlow winches on the internet but not sure which model you have.

Must be something obscuring the keeper.
Lightly dig around in the socket with a narrow pick? Who knows, maybe someone stuck a dust cap in there.

Some smaller Barlow winches just have a button to release the drum instead of the Allen screw. Depress the piece inside the winch handle hole and wiggle the drum up and down to see if it will release.
