I went out to sand some rust off of my winch post to repaint it, and suddenly I could see right through it. It appears to have been "repaired" before, but I want to do it right this time...replace the whole post. Can I take the winch post off with the boat on the trailer? I'm pretty sure it's not load bearing, but who wants to screw up on something like that?

Winch post

Depends on the boat type & arrangement of the rollers and bunk gear. There should not be any weight on the winch post except for the torque pressure from the winch itself. I've replaced the front roller on the post a couple of times by removing the post altogether. If in doubt, you may consider adding sometype of additional support before replacement. Also make sure your on a flat surface, not inclined. Just my thought.

found a post

I found a winch post at one of my local boat works. It's a couple of inches shorter than the current one, but since it is angled and the winch mount sticks up higher than the post I think it will work. If not, I'll have to buy the more expensive MagicTilt post I found online after I purchased the other one today. Now I just have to get the old one off. That may require a hacksaw since at least one of the u-bolts has damaged threads. Wish me luck.

Winch post

Interested in how you make out. I have a Magic Tilt trailer as well. Good luck.

wednesday

It's supposed to be in on wednesday. I'll install it after work and post the results, possibly with pictures.

here's why

I got the old post off today. I don't think the old U-bolts were very good quality since they broke off without too much effort. Here's a picture of what I found when I hit the rust with a wire brush last weekend. It's like this on both sides.

Corrosion---

With that much corrosion and rust, I'd make sure all the other parts of the trailer are O.K., especially the rear spring attachment and axle, etc. You don't want to gamble when you get it back on the road. Just my thought.

looking at it all now

I'm going over it all thoroughly now. I think the trailer is the worst part of my boat. I guess anything dipped in salt water this many times is just going to need a lot of attention. How should I go about fixing all this without moving the boat off the trailer? There is a marina about 5 miles from my house that I can get a guest slip at while the repairs are happening. Also, is there any way to prevent this much damage other than a good fresh water washdown each time I get home?

Trailer

I have a freshwater trailer, so I'm probably not the best person to ask for advise on the freshwater rinse. Can't harm it. My hunch is that the trailer has spent it's share of time in the weather and the elements have finally caught up with it. If you find that the corrosion is so bad in some of the other key areas as mentioned it may be cost effective just to look for a different trailer. Using the borrowed slip, as mentioned earlier, will make repaires somewhat easier. Start tapping with a mallet---if you go through the metal, it's time to replace Or you may want to take it to a marina or trailer center for an inspection. They may try to sell you a new trailer--at worse. But they should be able to tell you other areas that may need attention. Maybe you could use that borrowed slip while having this done, as well. You cold also get it repaired at a nominal charge if needed. Knowing the trailer is sound should be a priority. Not only for you, but others on the road.

good frame

The trailer frame is in good condition, no rust, cracked welds, etc. The only parts with issues are the repairables like springs, spring mounts, axel parts. I think it mostly needs attention. For being 24 years old, it's probably not in that bad of shape.

bad timing

I got my new post this morning. So far it's rained over an inch and it's only noon. Talk about annoyingly bad timing.

I win!!!

About $100 later, my new winch post is installed. Now to worry about the rest of the trailer.

You win!

Sounds like you're well on your way! Hope the rest goes as smooth. The effort will no doubt save you lots of $$$$$$ in lieu of a new trailer. Good luck the rest of the way!
