Corss Listed on Ask All Sailors Bad weather down here lately, so I have been bored. Pulled one of the jibsheet winches off of my C-27 on Sunday after a day of light air sailing. Sounded a little rough on a few pulls. Overhauled the winch today - wow, what a difference. I had no idea how smooth it could be. The winch is a dual speed Barient 21 - now defunct. I have posted my teardown method on the PHOTO FORUM if anyone is interested. I could not find teardown instructions for Barient 21's anywhere on the web - so here's how my little adventure went. Enjoy - Rob

re: winch re-build

I have a Cat 30, and all the Lewmar winches (4) were almost frozen solid. Have re-habed 3 so far and it was a long, (2 hours each) and messy job, but well worth it. Luckily, I found a brochure for maintenence on the boat and used that. But most of it is just common sense, make notes as you take it apart, clean it in kerosene, I used small wire brushes, pen knife, and time, and grease and re-assemble. Will check out your pics, I'm interested to see how the Lewmar and Bariants differ. Fair winds, Chris
