Winch overhall

Thinking about winter projects on my boat. Anyone ever pulled them apart and cleaned them up? Mine look like original hardware(old). Do you just pull the nut in hole from the top of the winch or take the whole thing off? Mine look like an Australian make?

if they are like mine which are an Australian brand, just remove the bolt from down in the bottom of the handle hole.... then lift it off slowly in case parts may drop out. everything should stay together, as it is supposed to, but ya never know...... they are of a very simple design and a bit of lube will make them work like new again.
you DO NOT have to remove the winch base from the boat...

A good trick is to make a hole in a box you can place over (and around) the winch before opening it in case anything tries top jump ship or alternately place some towels strategically around it. Winch maintenance should be a routine activity for every boat owner and is important to keep them working properly.

I always use a soda/beer flat box which reminds me to add that chore to the list and although I never use the mast winch's they desperately need some attention

I'm going to attempt winch maintenance for the first time. I need to do a total of 7 winches. Although I'm mechanically inclined, I'm not sure if it will be easy to find new pawl springs or other parts should they be needed. Is this something that is readily a available at say, West Marine?
I've got two mast winches as well. Saving those for last.

Depends on the make and model of your winches. The Barlow and Barient winches are long out of production. You should be able to get parts for Lewmar and Harken.

So far so good.......I've got Lewmar winches so when I needed to go to West Marine for springs I was happy to find them. Overpricing on the item was to be expected. They have glass doors at this store..........They can see me coming.

Third, Don and Rad's suggestion. I did one cabin top winch and had I not used the box containment system I'd probably still be looking for parts in San Diego Bay. Crew is complaining about having to use the handle all the time on the others so I guess the other 3 are in the near future.
