Winch on the mast for main halyard, to do or not to do?

We are considering putting a small winch on the mast to keep the main halyard off of the cabin top and cockpit. I am assuming that the winch would be held in-place with self-tapping screws, but putting more holes into the mast has never been my favorite thing to do. So any thoughts, recommendations before I take on this assignment? Thanks!

Holes in the mast for screws are fine. Most modern masts are festooned with holes of all shape and sizes. And you'll need a clutch to hold the halyard as well.

I would use a very good quality tap (NOT self tappers), and take your time. Those threads you cut are what will be holding the whole deal together

I have mast winches on my 30 and on my 22, halyards to the cockpit.

On my 30, I hate having to go on deck to raise or lower my main and genoa. Especially when single handing or with a rookie at the helm.

I would get halyard bags instead.

My 1977 Catalina only had two outside halyards. Now there are 4 total and all inside the mast with exit plates high enough to jump halyards. they go to turning blocks to the base of the mast then to organizers, back to clutches and winches on the cabin top. I can raise and lower sails or reef all from the cockpit. The over the cabin traveller is for sale. I installed a Harken system on the seats, just forward of the lockers.
Installed a much larger wheel that can be quickly removed so that I can open the lockers. Races much faster than her rating, specially with an oversize main. I did extend the crane to clear the leach from the back stay.
