Winch on a angle spacer or not?

Hello,My jib cheet get tangled on the winch all the time, the end coming from the sail always rool over the end going to the cleat.Do originaly on the Vega setup , is the sheet coming from the jib, in the track pulley ,to the wich ? Or is there some pulley that should be around the transom pulpit then toward the wich? Or shoul a angled spacer have to be installed under the wich? I have no idea, there is no other Vega around here.DavidVega 2226

I'd be interested in an expert's comment on this too.
My Lewmar 8 single speed winches are underpowered.
But the real problem is that the sheet lead from the sail to the port winch fouls the coaming just forward of the winch.
This because the sheet has to (as winch works clockwise) lead to the inboard side of the winch.
The gel coat on the coaming has been badly worn as a result. Is there any fix for this other than replacing the port winch with an anticlockwise winch or maybe an anti chafe bar on the coaming?
Thanks,

Hi all

I have the answer! About 5 years ago I was
fed up with this problem so I had an engineer mate cut a very thin polished
stainless steel sheet so it bent over the area with a cut out for the base of
the winch. Attached with some sikaflex and hey presto, problem solved. I will
see if I can get a photo. 2 mins to fit but a bit longer to
make

Hi Steve.
I tried to do that with a thin piece of aluminium sheeting and made a botch of it.
How did you make the piece of stainless sheeting conform to the curved shape of the coaming?
A picture would be great!

John, i also have many groove in the gelcoat near the winches, i a betting the cheet should pas in the track pulley then toward the transom and back up to the winch. But i will wait for input before doing changes. Thanks David 2226

No, don't do that, the block towards the transom is for the spinnaker sheet. Putting the full load of the jib sheet through that is asking for it to fail.I've never had either of those problems with my old Lewmar winches (OP's sheet fouling, or grooves worn in the gelcoat) but they're maybe not original MKI equipment. For the grooves, moving the genoa cars forward should help, as would raising low profile winches about a cm.I'm surprised at the fouling, I suspect there's something else going on there. Assuming the sheet is going the genoa car there should be no need for a wedge or extra fairlead. How many turns are you taking around the drum? What model winch?

Say 4 turns. The more the better for leverage..
Intrigued by your comment re "something else going on there".
Do you suspect some warping of the hull?

Two turns max for me. Gives all the grip I need, and can be quickly thrown off the winch if I need to 'let fly' in a hurry.Options for something else that might be goin on (in relation to the sheet continually catching) .. - sheet directly from sail to winch, i.e. with no fairlead - using 6mm string for a sheet and taking half a dozen turns round the winch - using a very low profile winch and rope that's way too thick - unusual method for tailing the winch - winch incorrectly fitted

The Ballad comes with the plate Steve describes, port side only. I also added two more sheet lead cars (one per side). The forward car is set for the best angle with the sail and the aft car adjusts the angle of the sheet onto the winch. Works like a charm.Peter.

Thanks Gordon ... Just read the part about running sheets through a turning block on the lee side and sheeting them with the windward side winch ... brilliant!I look forward to reading it in detailPeter.

Very interesting.
Was the anti-chafe plate factory fitted on the Albin Ballade?
If so, it does seem like a rare Vega design error.
Or is it a consequence of changing headsail shapes????
I'm puzzled that some Vegas don't have the problem - maybe when new winches are fitted the problem gets sorted???
I still have the (original??) Lewmar 8 cockpit winches.

The sheet should go from the block on the track to a turning block aft of the winch. That way the lead is the same regardless of which position on the track is used.

NO WAY should the sheet should go from the block on the track to a turning block aft of the winch .. just look at the size and fitting of the block compared to that of the winch, and consider the stresses invloved (I'm no engineer, but wouldn't the force be just about doubled on the block?) The range of angles from running the sheet through the genoa car is fairly limited - again, look at how robust those fittings are compared to those of any block you might be using.

An aft turning block is pretty common on many boats - mine included (not a Vega but the same size) and it works well. Keeps the lead the same wherever the block on the track is placed.
