Hello , I`m cleaning and regreasing my winches. My question is ...Lewmar,Anderson etc. grease ,the same as most marine grade greases? or is there an big differnce? I have a tube of marine grade grease ,not sure of the brand without looking, but i use it on my outboard motors, pivit points etc. Can i use what i have or should i buy brand name grease ? Thanks for any infor. Chet.

Teflon grease

you can use marine grease or for that matter any grease but I believe the preferred grease is Teflon grease. If you do you winches every other year use the marine but if you don't may want to go with the brand name.

There are many qualities of grease. Using one

that is water proof is your best bet. Being realistic about the demands on a winch helps. They turn at about 3 rpm about 100 turns per day. While any good farm motor will run at 1750 rpm for days at a time, all the while out in the weather.

Hey Ross....

What in the heck are you talking about? 3 rpm, 100 turns per day...farm motors...what's your point. He already said he uses marine grease.. he just wants to know if paying the extra bucks for the Lewmar or Anderson brand grease is worth it. Chet... buy the good grease. One tube will last a long time. Go to the winch maker's website for cleaning and maintenance instructions.

Joe most people don't make connections

and believe that there is something mysterious about things labeled "marine". There is no mystery it is all just machinery and the farm environment is just as harsh as the marine environment.

Chet....

here's an interesting winch maintenance article. http://www.catalina36.org/articles/maintenance/Winches/Winches.htm Main point.... don't put grease on the pawl springs.

Thanks guys

for the information. I did all four of them tonight, pretty easy job. Not that much differnt then cleaning and regreasing wheel barrings on a car. I didn`t know though about the pawl springs,so I guess it would be best to clean the grease off them,I put on. That won`t be that hard to do though. Thanks again for the replys. chet

Chet, when you are finished they should

sound like you are winding a clock when you turn them. Just a nice uniform clicking sound with no skipping.
