i have maxwell winches and a single 8" maxwell handle. i would like a spare handle for when i drop this one overboard. question is: are handles interchangable between winch brands? (is the "drive" end standard?).

...why not just buy a floating handle to keep as a backup? It's cheaper, it floats and can be replaced when you lose the current one.

William, According to Lewmar's website, all 'modern' (e.g. post 1936, I think) winches have a standardized star receiver. The exceptions would be on boats that are big enough to use ours as a dingy.
PS: Good forethought - I especially like the 'when' instead of the 'if'. I learned just a few months ago (second voyage on the new to me boat) how fast they sink and what a pain it is without one. Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer
