Winch handle holders

Hey all,

I've seen some reviews of new boats and it seem there is a mount that can hold winch handles under the seat in the aft lazarette. I'm curious if anyone's seen these in person and maybe how they are mounted. My 361 has a giant seat hatch and it would be ideal to place the winches under there, just lift it up and pull out in cockpit.

Cheers!

On my 1983 Hunter 31, the port bench lazerette above the aft berth is only about 6 inches deep. That is where we keep all winch handles and gloves. The starboard bench lazarette also has a shallow portion that could hold winch handles, but it opens up into the fuel and battery storage in the aft, and I fear items bouncing and dropping down there in rough seas. It is a tight squeeze for a 50 year old 200+ lb. guy to get down in there and retrieve stuff. I have to go down there this weekend to change the primary fuel filter.

Yeah, Pat, at 72, 5' 11' and 200, I've spent a lot more time down there than I care to recall redoing the fuel and exhaust systems, installing galvanic isolator and battery boxes, redoing the fresh water plumbing, and other related wiring. I think the 31 had a little teak rail in that small top area of the laz to keep things from falling in, but mine came off and I won't reinstall it till I'm pretty sure my days in there are largely at an end.

I still have the teak rail piece too, but it is the spare parts box, not to be reinstalled any time soon.

I ordered one from SnapIt and am very happy with it.
I like to have it close by when I need it.
Bought cup holders and even a smartphone holder from SnapIt as well.

Snapit stuff is very good. Lasts forever. I modified one to hold our Garmin 76Cx.

Hm, yeah those are the cockpit ones, I'm looking storage when not in use. I currently carry them in the chart table, which is not ideal given the size but I'm sort of used to it now. I'll see if I can find a picture or what boat it was, to me it looked like those boat hook clips to tie it down... under settee would be great location as its retrievable but also lockable.

Found it!

Ok finally found it on an Allures 45 review on Yachting Monthly (available on youtube). I have to make something like this, seems easy enough with two clips, I think I'd go epoxy glue over screws but either way, this is very clever.

Looks like regular spring clips like you'd hold a broom on the wall.
Check Home Depot/Lowes.

Yup, that was my thinking too, I think I'll look for one that has Velcro too, this locker is on struts (something else I'd like to do) so I'm thinking it gets a more dampened close than mine. RV shops always have cool stuff like this, I thought for sure there would be a overpriced marine product for this.

I think any additional weight on any lids is a bad idea. It's bad enough to get hit with one without winch handles.
