The plastic grip handle of my winch handle broke some time ago. Age and fatigue, which eventually gets all of us... Since I really like the winch handle (Maxwell), I replaced the grip recently with piece of hard wood tree branch from my yard. I made the replacement a bit wider in diameter than the original and so it works even better. Held in place with a circlip. A nice, easy, project if you happen to have a winch handle with a broken grip....

I think locust

Ross: While I'm not positive, I think I used a branch from a locust tree. Whatever it is, it is standing up to the rigors of use quite nicely. BTW, finished off with Cetol, which is also standing up to use quite well.

But oh lordy that stuff is hard.

Blade busters!

When I cleared my lot to build our house, I must have had 20 or 30 0r so of those locust all about 3" to 4" diameter to cut down. Nothing dulled my chainsaw blades faster than those skinny little buggers! I think I still have stacks of fireplace sized sticks out in the woods. I always figured that they could be used to dispatch an intruder or take on an errant black bear. That wood is hard and dense! That handle looks great. It might not be a bad project to take on even before the plastic handle goes bad!
