We need to dismantle our standard Lewmar No. 30 winches in order to remove them from our Catalina 30 (so we can repair the dry rotted wood below the fiberglass!). Does anyone know how to begin the dismantling process? Once we get the drum off, it should be straight forward from there. Please respond soon - I'd like to get out on the water again real soon! Thanks, Rod Worrell S/V Dixie

Lewmar Winches

Rod The link below is to Lewmar, who, if you search around a little on their website, have exploded views of their products. You could also go into any bookstore and do a little research by reading the winch sections, especially Calder's boatowner's manual. While it looks daunting at first, and I put my maintenance off for a few months until I did my own research, it's pretty easy once you get up the 'courage' to simply take the top off! Many will also encourage you to find a way to enclose the base of the winch to avoid losing small parts overboard, like a cardboard box with a hole the size of the winch base cut into it. Good luck, Stu
