I have Maxwell #14 self-tailing winches and do not know how to open them up for cleaning. Does anyone have a sketch or info on how to loosen the top part? I see no screws, clips or slots to get started. Any DIY guys out there? Any idea how to contact the manufacturer? I only se MAxwell, Australia, for windless winches on the web. Tahnks, all.

Maxwell, USA

A number of years ago I had the same problem with my 20's and 24's. I found Maxwell in the LA area at 949/631-2634. They faxed me the exploded view drawings that I needed. Still had the number in the Palm Pilot (my brain now as the original one is full). I just called and they are still there. Good Luck, Allan

Screw Top

The round center section of the top screws off to access the rest of the winch. There are two notches that the "key" would engage if they provided one with the boat (which isn't usually the case!) If the right tool isn't available, you can use two screwdrivers, crossing them and with a firm grip, you can unscrew the fitting. It might be a good idea to ust a little WD-40 to help loosen the fitting first. Be verrrrry careful with the parts as it is easy to lose them overboard! If the winches haven't been maintained in a while, soak the bearings in kerosene and dry them off good before applying winch grease. Use some light machine oil on the pawls...don't grease that part.
