Where can one obtain instructions on dismanteling and cleaning a small winch? Mine have never been done in 13 years. This winter might be a good time. What is the best lubricant?
I would suggest that you find out the manufacturer of the winch, go to their web site, find the appropriate manual, downloan it, and go from there. Or, you might have to call them for a manual. At any rate, the web site is a good beginning point.
Ken, Bob's advice is sound. I have to replace the pawls in my winch. I went to the web site and got plenty of information plus phone numbers to call. They use two different lubricants for the winches. One is for the pawls and the other is for the other parts. They told me to make sure I cleaned the parts well before applying the new grease. I got a suggestion from the archives here about using a box cut out to fit over your winch so the parts don't get away from you and end up going over the side. I'll probably do it this spring when the weather warms up. Paul HS/V Linda Belle95 H26
