I am looking for some friends with common interests. I am an avid sailor and own a 27 ft Sloop. I am looking to expand my experience by crewing or just hanging around with other people of same interests. I would like to crew, help with boat repairs, and soak up knowledge from anyone that either needs a hand or just some company. I am Navy trained, have a college degree and am semi-retired. I am available from Monday thru Friday. I have medical knowledge and some repair knowledge and have some tools. I am a advanced certified diver with all my own equipment. I would recommend joining a yacht club. Put aside any stories you might hear about competitions between clubs or their snobbishness, because they all have quite a bit to offer. The Port Orchard Yacht Club I have belonged to for 35 years is a great club for sailors even though it is 60% power boaters. The other clubs I belonged to on the east coast were predominantly sailing clubs. and they were great too, maybe even better. Some, like mine have their own extensive moorage facilities, and one that I belonged to had its own storage facility (they both had Grids or haul out accommodations). Those that don't have moorage facilities or club moorings provide wet or dry dingy storage and some may run you back and forth to your boat in club operated launches, but none require to moor there. They all promote boating and/or sailing, and sponsor cruises and races for the participation of their members. They also promote boating and sailing education and generally have sailing , power squadron, and Coast Guard courses(plus inspections) right at the club. We just completed a 100 ton Masters license course at our club. They have a lot of social functions too, and the have reciprocal moorage agreements with other yacht clubs, so you can cruise to those clubs and moor at no charge. Most importantly for your question, they always have dedicated sailors and racers who are looking for crew for major races, and that I think is what you are looking for. If you can't afford to join a yacht club, try to find one where you can post your name as a sailor interested in crewing, and see what happens. Good luck Joe
