We have a 1975 Catalina 27 with a dead Volvo MD6A. After considering the various options, we've decided to empty out the savings account and replace it with a new Yanmar 2GM20. After measuring and figuring, it looks like it will fit. But will it? Anybody tried putting one in? Thanks for any advice.

Rebuilt MD6A

Just over a week ago I noticed an ad on the ad board at Trotac Marine in Victoria, B.C. for a total rebuilt MD6A or MD8A with "0" hours on it. The fellow was asking either $3600 or $3800 Canadian for it. That would be about $1800/1900 US. The person selling the engine lives on Salt Spring Island I believe and will deliver within reason. I considered replacing the YSE12 Yanmar that died in our C30 with the 2GM20 but it was going to get real expensive. ie: $8900 for the engine plus tax, change the shaft and prop and convert to fresh water cooling. So we opted to rebuild the YSE12 which is now in the engine shop. If you are interested in this other MD6A I will be back home in Victoria as of June 1st and would be happy to get you the telephone number off the ad and get it to you. You can e-mail me in Victoria at: ccarter@pacificcoast.net

Considered the A-4?

There are a few blocks out there to be had, and they can be overhauled and rebuilt for as little as 2,400 with all internal parts, a bit more if you are missing the pistons and internal parts. Something to think about. Rob
