A friend of mine has a trailer for a 1994 HUnter 26, Water ballast. I wanted to purchase it and modify it with some support pads farther out to the right and left for my 1987 26.5. The trailer is rated for 7000 lbs. The beams on both boats are about the same at 9'. The lengths are comparable. The 26.5 has a fixed keel with a draft of 3'6" the water ballast has a 1'9" draft with the center board raised. Does anyone out there know if this will work?

A few things to ponder...

Barry, I currently have an 87' 26.5. The trailer is built by Glide Ride and has two axles, one of those has electric brakes. Even though the trailer you have found is rated for the weight, is the configuration correct? Single Axle, Double Axle, etc. Are the axles in the right place? If I recall correctly, 60% of the weight of the boat should ride on the keel with the remaining 40% being supported by the trailer bunks. Is the proposed trailer set up to take that kind of load? Just a couple of questions I would be asking... E-mail me at svwalkabout@hotmail.com and I will send you pictures of my trailer if you'd like for comparison.

I Would be Concerned About the Crossbraces

They are not setup on the 260 trailer to handle all of that weight resting on them in the middle. That and getting the weight distribution correct which could probably be done satisfatorly by moving stuff from one end to the other or even adding if necessary I think it would work fine.

I know the trailer too well and also both boats mentioned. There is no way to modify the bunk boards safely to accomodate the 26.5 and also you do not have a substantial keel tray either which will be required. Under no circumstances do not use that trailer; otherwise boat, trailer and possibly yourself will get hurt. Crazy Dave Condon
