I am going to Strip the bottom on my boat and a previous owner used what looks like VC tar and then Interprotect 2000. Will the Peel Away remove both of these barrier coats? I am only removing them so I can get a more uniform finish. Some places I have bare glass and other's splotches of Tar/2000. I want to get a smooth as glass finish and can only do this by starting with gelcoat. Cliff

The Peel Away should only remove the anti-fouling paint. I do not believe that it will remove the baarrier coat, as that is a plastic-based substance.

Two types of Peel-Away
I think the original (Peel-Away I) will remove only bottom paint. It is about $100 per 5 gallon pail. The other is Peel-Away II and it will remove barrier coat also. It costs about twice as much. I may have the names exchanged, so please check before buying.

Peel Away
Several years ago I used Peel Away to remove bottom paint. I had epoxy barrier coat, Interlux 2000/2001. The paint came off great and left the barrier coat -- which is what I wanted. Suggest you go read the instructions on the can. Sure way to find the answer. If there are two different types of stripper, read both. Best of luck

I couldn't get Peel Away to remove much paint, so clearly it won't remove the barrier coat.

Peel Away
Different products can act differently for different people under differing circumstances. Here is what I did: read the directions, spread the Peel Away with a 1/8 trowel, four feet at a time, put on the special paper pressing it into the Peel Away, and when I had the entire boat done (four feet at a time) I went home for the night. When I arrived back at the boat the next morning, much of the paper holding the paint had fallen to the ground on to the tarp I had put down. Using a four inch putty knife, I scrapped the rest of the bottom removing most of the paint along with the paper, rolled up the tarp and put it into the trash. Scrubbed the bottom, sanded the bottom lightly and put on two coats of bottom paint. Worked for me. And I might add, easier than grinding it off. Best of luck.

If you will google peel-away paint remover on the web you will see that there are at least five different types of Peel-away remover. Each is intended for a different purpose. You just have to do your homework before you decide what to purchase. The web site will tell you whether you can buy direct (I seem to remember that it was possible. Home Depot carries Peel-Away but in my area, not the marine version.

I just got word from Peel-Away regarding what to use and where to get it. "Our PEEL AWAY I- sold in Home Depot is the SAME as the Marine Strip II and is easier to find. This will remove bottom paint from fiberglass hulls without disturbing the epoxy barrier coating. It will also be very safe to the get coat." Hope this helps.
