Nobody can take you out for pay legally unless they have a Coast Guard License - it is not something that most of us can do legally. Your best bet is to contact a sailing charter outfit or a sailing school. I recommend - from experience - Blue Water Sailing in Marina Del Rey. I took ASA 104, did two days of private lessons and have done bareboat chartering through them. Have Ash or Peter take you out. Ash is a super nice guy, very knowledgeable; and Peter's knowledge and experience level has to be experienced to be believed (IYT trainer). I learned a ton from both of them. You do not need any experience to charter a boat with a captain/instructor. A link is below. OC

but also foolish to allow total strangers in your boat. A licensed captain doing charters should file a float plan with a list of paying passangers and their ID information.

Go for a demo sail
Why don't you pop into the Catalina dealer in MDR and tell them you may be in the market for a 35'+ boat? If you're serious and they know it, maybe they'll take you out for a demo sail for free. There's also a Jeanneau (and probably a Hunter) dealer right by there too. I know the Catalina dealer is on the far east end of the harbor, one street over from the West Marine or so. All the magazines whine about how the number of people getting into sailing are dwindling, and maybe this is the reason why....someone shouldn't have to PAY to go try a sport they might want to "invest" in. If their first experience in sailing is a couple hundred buck outing, imagine the message that sends? Sure, it IS an expensive hobby, but no sense in ruining a want-to-be's impression from the very first day! Good luck!

Why not race?
Go to a local marina/yacht club. find out when and where to jump on a boat to race. Most local races are always short on people. Dont know nothing about sailing....you become 'rail meat,' those are ones that just sit on the high side to help balance the boat. Now you will be able to sail at least once a week and each time on a different boat.
