Glow plugs

A common problem with glow plugs is the solenoid craping out. It happens on my Westerbeke twice is 12 yrs. An easy way to check if your glow plugs are working is to watch the volt meter (if you have one). You should see a couple of volts drop when you push. Note; the solenoid will still "click" even though it's bad. You may have a bad injector. The funny thing about diesels is that unlike gas engines that will run rough when something is going bad. The diesel usually runs fine one day and then not start the next. I had this exact problem a couple of seasons ago. The engine was running fine, I'm motoring for 3 hrs into and anchorage. While idling as I'm dropping the anchor the engine stalled. That was it, it would not start again. It turned out to be fouled injectors.
