My ever fearful wife asked me to post this message. She is terribly fearful that our new 19 Mariner 2+2 will tip over. She is not the "heeling over" kind. While I have assured her that the O day is very forgiving and trustworthy, "confirmed evidence from the experience" out there would be appreciated. I am comfortable with the 19 (albeit new) I have been impressed with how she handles. Everyone's advice and reassuance is welcomed. Thank you. Geeser at Three Mile Pond Maine.

It might be possible, but you'd have to really try

Michael, Unless you find yourself in a hurricane, you should be ok. Hurricanes tend to attract some attention, so I find it easy to not go sailing when one is about. A good clue is: if all the boats where you normally sail are on the beach, and its not winter, maybe you should go to a museum. The Mariner CB is not a true keel boat, but is ballasted heavily enough to give her keel like stability. You would have to get punched by a _very_ large gust to knock her down from wind alone. Wave action could do it, but you'd be talking about big, big waves of the type associated with a major storm (see above to recognize major storms). The real issue you might be faced with is bailing your cockpit. If the boat gets knocked over, it should right itself with ballast. You would then have a lot of water inside. The action of sloshing water is called free surface effect and tends to cause a boat full of water to tip over easily again. So, you need to get the water out in a hurry. A bailer in the bottom or transom could do it for you. I would call Stuart Marine in Rockport. They still make Mariners, though with a lot of modifications. They may have some ideas for you. As far as your wife goes: Make sure she understands the physics involved with sailing. She doesn't have to know that she understands physics, but if you show her that there is ballast, and that it wants to be pointed down, she will understand that the boat wants to be right side up. If you show her that as the boat heels, it presents less sail area to the wind, she'll understand that the further the boat heels, the more effect the ballast is going to have. I would also teach her to sail so that she comes to trust the boat. Give her the sheet and let her control the angle of the heel. I think she'll quickly learn to love it. Good luck, and let me know if you're going to be down in Portland. We could grab some coffee and talk boats, or I'd take you out on the bay. Is it tippy?

On June 10 we raced in 5 to 30 knots of gusty shifting wind. As fleet captain a set a course with two long windward legs and one downwind leg. Each leg was about a mile. In our fleet was an 1979 O'Day 19. We were sailing our 1992 J22. At times we had water on the deck which means 25% of heal. I was to busy to notice how thw O'Day was handling the weather, but was surprised to see the O'Day finish right after a Catalina Capri 22. The O'Day has a generous beam and is not over powered. Will it capsize? Of course, under the right conditions any boat will capsize. In my opinion the O'Day 19 is a safe and stable boat as is evidenced by one's performance yesterday. The 19 seems to be more stable and forgiving than Daysailor, Rhodes 19 or Mariner. Additionally, all the 19 I have seen have positive foam floatation should you take on water. In sum, your gal should feel at ease in this boat in any conditions she will let you take her out in. Get her a self inflating PFD and tell her to wear it and enjoy herself. By the way, my wife stays ashore while Claire, Patricia and I race the J.

finding her very stable

Thanks for the responses everyone. I continue to feel the Courtney E. out but have been very impressed. I have been going out myself to put her through the paces. I have learned to just let her ride through the small bursts of wind we sometimes get over and above the breeze. She is really a fun boat. I had a glorious solo sail on Friday afternoon. Not alot of wind but enough to buzz around for a while before the sunset. As my confidence grows, I believe the wife will loosen up. I like the idea about the PDF. Thanks again for the encouragement. Geeser
