I've got a Garmin NUVI I use for land based navigation but I'm wondering before I shell out 100 bucks for Garmins PC map of the Great Lakes if the NUVI will upload GPS coordinates to the Garmin maps via the USB port. Anyone done this?

Are you talking about getting the BlueCharts for the Great Lakes? If so, be aware that the MapSource program no longer does live tracking of the GPS. Garmin, for some reason, cut out the program's ability to track the GPS in realtime a few versions back.
However, depending on what model Garmin you have, you may be able to use it with something like SeaClear II, with the right driver for it. Then you could use the free ENC or BSB charts from NOAA. However, these will only cover the US waters, and you'll probably be missing the Canadian waters. The Garmin BlueCharts cover both.

If it doesn't work with Blue Charts then that pretty much takes care of that idea. I'll just get the coordinates off the NUVI and plot them on paper (backup to the chartplotter).
I just went to West Marine & asked if I could buy a new Garmin Nuvi for going on my snomobile's handlebars. They said yes. I asked iof I could take out my map card from my marine unit & slide it into the side slot & get marine maps? Yes, but the street program has to be turned off. As I won't buy this till next Oct. I have no experiance, only a clerks word for it.
