What a graphic story!!!

Jim- I think you two earned more than just some wine!! I do suggest that your crew get some sort of medal for her efforts. It sounds like she really did a lot to help......which, of course, is the difference between a crew and a GREAT CREW!! Certainly got me awakened into the spirit of the story. Great job!! Congrats on "getting it done"......by the way, what color were the pants you were wearing :)???????

what doesn't kill us...

Good story, you both are better sailors for that adventure. Besides, if nobody get's hurt and nothing breaks it is a GREAT day sailing!! It's a series of "weekend" trips like yours that made my wife tell me we need a bigger boat, twist my arm dear.. As for weather, here's a typical NOAA screw-up. This summer we had a forcast for a minor tropical storm to make landfall in our area of SW fla. The storm was called Gabrialle and she was forcast to come ashore friday evening with max.winds at 45-50 knots. No big deal as far as tropical systems go. She rolled ashore just before dawn with sustained winds of 72 MPH and gusts above that. Public schools were still open, you should have seen the school children waiting at their bus stops in near hurricane winds with sideways rain. Even the county officials were caught with their pants down and egg of their face. Just under a week later electricity was restored from this "minor" storm.

Enjoyed Your Story

Enjoyed your story. Guess you guys have a lot more guts than we do. I tried to trace your trip on the map, Rock Hall was easy enough to find on Delmarva but I couldn's find Sandy Point. We received our boat in June this summer and spent most of the time in the Great South Bay. Our longest overnight trip was from Massapequa, Long Island, to Sailors Haven on Fire Island (approx 18 miles). It was a wonderful adventure and, fortunately, not as exciting as yours. I would imagine that you folks spend most of your time on the Chesapeake which, in time, I would like to visit myself. I hope some day we can meet. Thanks again for the great story!

My wife no longer trust the NOAA wind predictions

and automatically adds 5 to 10 knots to whatever NOAA says. We had a sort of similar experience at the beginning of this sailing season when we took delivery of our new Hunter 290. We took delivery in Bay Shore LI and moved the boat ourself to our home port up the Hudson River at Haverstraw Marina. It was late April and we planned a weekend to move the boat. So for the days prior NOAA was pridicting 15 to 20 knot winds. We left Bay Shore at 6am on Saturday April 28, under cloudy skies, to make to Fire Island Inlet close to slack tide. The winds were calm in the 5 knot range. It was chilly, but we we were all excited. By the time we got into the Ocean the winds were 10-15 knots. Once we were a mile or 2 offshore we raised the sails and headed West. After a couple of hours the wind pick up to 15 to 20 knots, so we reefed the sails and continued on. By noon the winds were 20 to 25 knots, so we started the engine and took in the sails. By Mid afternoon the winds were 25 to 30 knots with gusts to 35, and were were all cold, wet, and seasick. We were all finally gald to get into New York Harbor where we finally got some protection from the winds. So since then my wife never trusts NOAA. PS. It was also the last time we all saw the World Trade Towers up close. We stayed at Liberty Landing Marina, just across the river from Manhattan, and the skyline of the city, with the sun setting in the West, was spectacular. Then next time we head down there I expect we will all be crying.
