cp, that was a heckuva informative post, and sounds like my "issue" exactly.
Hmm, flashing blue LED, huh? Man....I've already thought of about five crazy tales I could put on people with that. 'That's fiber optic laser radiation, ma'am. Please stand back'..

I considered a "Bullet, etc", wi-fi extender, but,
now, when we go cruising, I just activate the Wi-Fi hot spot on my Verizon cell phone (for $15/mo, I think). Simple, no new equip to buy, install and configure, and it works fine. Don't have to worry about finding the elusive "open" wi-fi signal.
Am I missing something ?
yes. $15 a month ;)

Actually, as long as you're able to connect with your cellphone wherever you are, and you're happy with the bandwidth, it's a very reasonable solution.

This was posted elsewhere, but the Bullet is IT! I used Bob at Islandtime PC. $250.00 plus 16 bucks shipping. A whiz-bang install, that is worth every penny and then some. I'm a huge fan of non aggravating equipment. Plug. Play. Fergit it..

(And when Rich and Wayne went there, (the bullet), that was enough for me. I try and emulate smart people, thereby making me appear less stooopid)...

Happy "Bullet" user

I'm looking at putting a wifi router onto my boat.

Ideally something that will also pick up shore based wifi as well.

Is there such a device? Has anyone installed one?

Do they come with 12VDC input voltage?

Thanks

Simon
Kordie, I have used IslandTime PC's "Bullet" set up without any trouble for over 2 yrs now. It is pretty darned amazing. Complete outfit available and CS is best I have ever had.

Do you use an I-Phone or similar smart phone? If I'm at a marina with wifi I just connect to that. Otherwise you can do what's called "tethering" with your i-phone. Simply turn on the "Personal Hotspot" option in the settings on your phone. It will then create a wifi hotspot using your cell signal. You can connect any wifi capable device to this hotspot and you're off to the races.
That is not an option on US iPhones. I know it is available on phones sold in the UK but disabled in the US for some reason.

Most any smartphone in the US is capable of being a hotspot. You just have to enable it with your carrier. It will likely cost you extra.

We use FoxFi on our Android phone to create a hot spot. I does not cost us anything additional with Verizon.

There were other options that did cost a monthly fee.

You can always use a cheap inverter and plug it into to a 12vdc outlet to try it out. These solutions are a lot cheaper than the "boat" solutions.

Not sure about all of them, but the Linksys routers use a 12vdc wall transformer, so it would very easy to hook one up to your boats battery.

Haven't done it in a boat, but have in an RV.. I have an older linksys (Wireless-G) that I picked up off Craiglist for $15 and converted into a repeater using DD-WRT software flashed into it. Works great and lets me 'borrow' other peoples internet connections when I don't have one of my own. Range can be further increased by the use of a high gain antenna like a cantenna or similar.

Cheers,
Brad
