wierd old winch

I have seen this style before on older boats like mine. The handle fits in a slot in the top rim, rather than on top like conventional winches. Although I have one handle for my two winches, I have not found any in any other catalog. Does anyone recognize it? I am interested in determining if the 'wincher'... that product that is a rubber ring that slips over the top of conventional winches to make them self cleating, would fit this style.

It's a Merriman

I have two of them on Oh Joy's mast. I don't know about that self tailing device fitting or not.

Don't waste your money on a "wincher". It's too easy to lose one when the sheet is on its winch and you pull or winch it. If you insist on buying a pair I would sell you my two for $20 plus shipping. I have never been able to find the winch handel for my winches like yours.

Yep, Merriman's. Try minneysyachtsurplus.com. 949-548-4192. They only show sails on their website, but have tons of other stuff, give them a call.

That's not wierd. I have two with a handle for each.

sometimes "Baconsails" has some handles on their shelves.

They smashed up a sailboat at our marina that had numerous winches like that, and 2 long and wide handles (for the larger winches) and 2 smaller handles. I had no use for them so left them for the scrap people. This was only three or four months ago.

Thanks for those prompt responses people. Always count on a sailor to help you when in a quandry! As for the offer of sale Novelman, I have e-mailed you off list. Now to keep the thread going, are these an older style winch or what?

Roger- Winchers will not work on your winches. Say that five times in a row! They would go over the "slot" for the winch handle. I have had a pair of Winchers on my boat, they work for me, I like them. Rob
