What is the purpose of a spinaker? Would you want to use one on a Widgon?

Spinnaker on a Widgeon

I learned to use a spinnaker on a Widgeon. I learned to sail at Interlochen Arts camp and they had an old widgeon there. It was a great little boat and the spinnaker was a blast. We would live for windy (maybe even stormy) days so that we could tack to one end of the lake and fly down with the spinnaker. I would say if you have the option, do it. The other great part of this situation is that a spinaker for a Widgeon is so small that you can almost man it single handedly. Just my thoughts. -h. hey -- Mariner owner

Rod Johnson,

I had one too!

My old Widgeon, a 1969 model, came with a spinnaker when I bought her used in 1988. I now have a DS II, boy do I miss that spinnaker! I sailed 99% of the time solo in the Widgeon, but could still manage to set and douse the "chute" alone. It was a BLAST! The only time that I had a problem was the windy day that I didn't get the spinnaker doused in time to avoid an embarassing beach landing, but that was still all part of the fun. I learned an awful lot about sailing and using a spinnaker during the 7 seasons that I sailed that Widgeon.
