I am interested in buying a second hand hunter 34 as i think the ship has all the looks a sailingboat needs and compared to other boats the price of hunters in general are quite reasonable. My question to hunter owners is could you share me some of your experience in why i should buy the boat compared to other sailing vessels in in about the same catagory. are there disadvantages to the hunter? if so what should be aware of? thanks for your time upfront.. Simon Laan, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. ps. does anyone know how much shipping a boat to europe would cost?

Customer Service

When I bought my second Hunter it was for much different reasons than when I bought my first, The first was because the Hunter 280 was a sleek, fast (for it's rating) fun boat for my family. What I found in dealing with Hunter, and specifically Hunter Customer Service headed by Eddie Breedan was a group of profesionals always ready to help with new boats or old. Mine was new and under warranty and they were great to deal with. When it ws out of warranty and no longer covered, the often covered things anyway because it was the right thing to do. When it was time to trade up to the 380 it was an easy decision. I knew no matter what went wrong they would make it right. It's alot easier to sleep at night when a big investment like a new 38' sailboat is protected. Whether by insurance for storms or Hunter Customer Service for problems. No other manufacturer has this level of support. Most, always refer you to your dealer, and unfortunately that doesn't work as well. Dealers sell you the boat and move on to the next sale often leaving owners hanging. Hope this helps in your decision making, it did in ours. Bob & Liz Knott H380 S/V Serenity

Customer Service - I Second that

Excellent customer service was also one of the key reasons I traded up to a 376.

Plentry of good reasons to buy an H34

Simon, Can't help you with the shipping costs, but you can read several owners' reviews of the H34 on this site. I think the reviews adequately point out the model's plusses and minuses. All in all, a lot of boat for the money. You might note that many reviews cite weather helm -- the boat has a tall rig and might have to be run reefed a lot in the heavier winds you experience in northern Europe. Good hunting!

Glad we have a 34

After spending 6 months looking at a variety of boats I am glad that we found our 1983 H34. We checked a variety of manufactures with lengths varing from 28 to 37 feet. It has the most room of any in it's class in my opinion. I think it even has more space than the newer 34's. Best value for money, and sails great. Like any older boat it has it's quirks and we have invested over time in replacing/upgrading/repairing several items. That's all part of building a relationship with your boat. The only reason we will ever part with our boat is when we are ready to sell up and go cruising full time. If we stick with monohulls then a Hunter will definately be on our shopping list. One factor that did sway us towards Hunters was this web site and the wonderful group of people who contribute to it. Good luck with your search. Scott 83-H34 Island Hops

What to look for in a 34'

the 1983 hunter 34, has a smaller rudder, in 84 and on the rudder was enlarged, thr 34' came in both shallow and std draft keels, for that rig you best go with the std draft, the B7R rig with dbl spreaders can not be tuned by a amiture, also with this rig make sure your jiffy reef system works and You know how to use it proficiently, the boat is a racer more than a cruiser, so be prepared to move!!! IF you're looking for a good classical cruiser with nice lines, look at the 33 1980/ 1983 hunters, designed by John Cherebini, and rated as one of the best designs by Matte and at half the price of a 34'

Would NOT recommend

I bought a 336 new. After frying six batteries the charger had to be replaced, the head system has never worked properly, the knot meter, RPM indicator, and depth finder do not work, the running lights may or may not come on, the stereo has a short, and all I have gotten from Hunter is two coffee mugs. The dealer has been aware of these problems for over a year and I have written and called Hunter with NO response or help.

Excellent Service

I purchased a 40.5 new in 1995, and it was my first Hunter. You cannot find a better company for customer service. They try to help, admit when they've made a mistake, pull out all the stops to fix whatever they can, and treat people with repect. Their employees are a class act, who always call back promptly, and listen well.
