Why no boom vang?

My Catalina 30 and, I guess, other models, have no boom vang. Why is that? Is it considered unnecessary on these boats because of somthing about their design? Have others felt the need to add one? If so, what did you attach it to on the boom, the forward mainsheet pulley attachment?

Other do have them (or add them)

My Catalina 30 also lacks a boom vang, but I plan to add one. If you look through the archives you can find plenty of examples of other owners that swear by the rigid boom vangs that they have added. I believe that CatalinaDirect has a kit.

Boom Vang

The Catalina product line is geared more toward day sailing, week ending and cruising. While some people do race their Catalinas, they often require different type running rigging. One such addition would be a boom vang. When sailing close hauled, very close to the wind, the vang adds tension to the main to help flatten out the sail, which is necessary on this point of sail. Adjustments are made at other points of sail to optimize the shape. Running very close to the wind may not be the most comfortable point of sail for a non-racing boat, but most races have at least one leg dead into the wind. Most recreational sailors do not need the vang with the design and purchase of the main. It will help with older sails that have stretched.

Added one myself

I added a vang myself to aide in down wind sailing. On occasion i will use a handy billy to haul the boom to a stanction base and really flatten the sail.Im thinking about a kicker or something else to get rid of the topping lift.

Rigid Vang

Contact Garhauer Marine and order a rigid boom vang. They're an OEM for Catalina and know exactly what fits the C-30. I'm not too sure about the current price but I think it was around $220 or so. This compares pretty well to the traditional "soft" vang at about $150-$180. The rigid vang is much bettter and lets you get rid of the topping lift in that it also supports the boom, thereby making reefing much easier. There website is pretty easy to find. Not to take anything away from Catalina Direct, but I'd prefer dealing directly with Garhauer for a Garhauer product. They're great people to deal with.
