Why no boom vang?

vang

If you sail down wind it's good to have a vang. The vang will hold the boom down when wind is from aft and the main sheet is all the way out. A gust or slight change in direction of the wind can lift the boom. I think it's called a "goose winged jibe". The vang also helps to flatten the sail when close hauled. I learned to sail in a boat without a vang and my first boat, a Columbia 22, didn't have one either. It wasn't absolutely necessary, but it sure would have been nice to have one.

Had a Oday 19

I too had an Oday 19 and wondered why they never had a Vang for it. Downwind the main sail tended to really balloon with the boom floating alot of play. I also found that unexpected jibes were something to especially watch out for on that boat- not much clearance. I moved on to Oday 23 and found that main jibes weren't as volatile. Probably a good idea to install one if you find your sailing area has you usually downwind running. But watch out for those jibes. Jim McCue

I like vangs

Particularly on smaller boats, they can help to control heel and on centerboard boats even help prevent capsize. The other posters have pointed out the benefits of the vang while running, but there is an advantage to windward as well. If you drop the mainsheet to prevent excess heel (or dumping the boat) without a vang, the boom will pop up, increasing draft and with it heel. On a boat with a lot of mass, this doesn't matter, but on a light boat it can result in a broach or even a flip. So - I like them. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

You really need one!

I have an ODAY Mariner 2+2 and it came with a Boom Vang! Have sailed this baby since new (1975) and would not live without one. Price is not expensive. Try Sail Net or Pyacht.Com for a Schaffer or Harken unit. You should be able to purchase one that will work for about $100.00. If you are into jibing, a boom vang is essential!! Ken Cave

vang me anyway

I would get, buy or build something .I connect the vang on my 22 as soon as I set the halyard and downhaul. I haven't found any time when I wanted the boom to lift.I believe a goosewing jibe is when the boom lifts in a jibe and catches on the backstay on it's way across; it happened to me once in a narrow channel and it got pretty exciting for a while! Also I think keeping the vang tight helps me get by without a traveller, keeping the cockpit a little less complicated.

It will damage your main!

Sailing downwind without a vang will allow the mainsail to ballon forward causing it to rub agianst your shrouds and spreaders. Get one installed ASAP before you wreck your sail.

Which type?

Most seem to prefer the rigid vang. My boat has an adjustable topping lift so I opted for a Garhauer rope vang. For a downwind run of any distance I move the vang from the mast base to the toerail. Now I have a preventer AND a vang.

Buying boom vang soon....

I learned to sail in a 15' Designer's Choice, with a boom vang. So, I was alarmed when my O'Day 192 seemed to be o.k. without a vang. I think the general idea is that I should get one. Thanks for the info. Larry
