Why doesn't my AIS position update on marinetraffic.com?

And that WOULD NOT be AIS.
True. MarineTraffic calls this mAIS.

Just checked again and MarineTraffic still hasn't seen anyone on Great Salt Pond in like 20 hours. If you have any friends in the area with AIS you could hail and confirm they see you, but without doing that I'd be pretty confident the problem is not on your end.

Enjoy your Bloody Mary, the walk and the weekend. We'll be looking for you when you return into view on the AIS system. Tell then stay cloaked in mystery.

Les, that is total B.S.! You don't understand how AIS works. If you are within VHF range of a vessel with AIS, receiver-only or otherwise, you will be seen. It operates on VHF frequencies 161.975 Mhz and 162.025 Mhz - 87 & 88 old VHF channels. You don't need a shore station to be seen by other vessels that are within VHF range; and, vessels you can see on the Internet will not show up on your chart plotter! The shore station is only to put the data on the Internet.
Sorry I wasn’t clear - you’ll be invisible to the internet services like MarineTraffic, vessel finder ...,,

One way to automatically keep track of yourself on MarineTraffic.com is to create a "fleet" and add your boat to the fleet. In the user account info section go to notifications, select your boat and enable notifications. An email will be sent with a daily position report if MarineTraffic.com detects your AIS transmission. It will also send an email when the boat enters or leaves a port. The free accounts allow for 30 notifications per month.
