I've been working on some companionway boards for the last couple of weeks. After sanding between coats of varnish my tack rag had just about given out. No matter how well I wiped down I could still feel some grit on the boards. Monday while in the closet getting dressed I look over and see the lint roller for removing crud off your clothes. *pop IDEA why not use the lint roller on the boards. It worked - there was nothing left behind - great tack rag..... One of those - "Why didn't I think of this before" Jim S/V Java

Great for cleaning too

This is one of our primary cleaning tools for our boat. One of the others is the magic erasers(recommended by Maine Sail of course) BTW, be careful that the roller leaves no residue on your work. Tim R.

Jim the best tack rags I've ever used are microfiber rags! They also tell you if your surface is properly sanded.. I really like the lint roller idea too.. If you were to roll it on a piece of clean glass it would tell you a lot about what, if any, sticky residue is being left behind..

Repackage it and sell it.

Tag it with the word "marine" or "nautical" or "boating" and you can charge $245.95. :) Great find!

Spider Webs Too

Lint rollers are great for removing the spider webs strands that are always on your canvass. Just roll the canvass, especially under the bimini.

Maine Sail, After reading your post I walked over to the window and tried the lint roller on the glass - no residue. Brian, we should contact Alan and see if he will market it for us. We could charge the power boaters that price but I think the sailors would just go into their closets ;D Joan loves Magic Eraser, Given a chance she would wipe the whole boat down with it. Jim

Magic erasers?

I'm not sure I know what these are. Are we talking about the Mr. Clean product here? What are some of the most common uses on the boat? Do they work on decks, transoms, etc. or mostly on inside the cabin stuff?

The lint roller...

As Alton Brown would say... "A multi-tasker"! Magic Erasures are, well, OK, I guess. I have never found a good use for them. Someone recommended them to clean the bird poop off my deck. Didn't work. But a spritz of vinegar and a little brush cleaned the poop right up. Even the industrial nuclear type from the Ospreys.

The Magic Erasers are great for

wiping down and completely cleaning the cockpit cushions and making them look like new - we still have the original tan colored ones that came from Catalina in 1986! You'll know the material that's made of (although it's not vinyl, but I don't know just what it is). The MEs are the ONLY thing we've found that works within any reasonable amount of effort. Prior reports are that the MEs are great on lifelines, too. Great find, Jim, thanks for sharing. Now we've finally gotten a project for the Admiral - find the lint thingies and bring 'em down to the boat!!! :) I volunteer to do ALL the work!
