While sailing most of my life (started as crew on a friend's Highlander in the 50's) I didn't get into the sport for real until started leasing a Dufour 30' in the late 80's. A great way to get into the sport with all of the upside and very little of the downside (breakdowns, mechanical issues, etc.) If I "broke" something then it would have been my expense, otherwise the owner paid for all wear and tear expenses.

Late in the summer of '89 I came back from a cruise on the Dufour to find a note on the marina's bulletin board that our Dock Master was selling his 1981 Hunter 33 for well below market value. The boat was in pristine shape but very basic instrumentation and no goodies. Two weeks later I owned my first boat! Over the years I was continually upgrading (electronics, added refrigeration, and eventually re-powered, etc.). I'm 6'-3" and over the years got a little tired of not being able to truly stand up down below. So I started dreaming.

Fast forward to 2007 when motoring around the harbor I smacked an uncharted rock. My insurance company wanted to "total" the boat. I accepted the offer and using the insured value of the boat in my pocket to use as a down payment, I started shopping.

A year and change later, after looking at about 25 possibilities I found (in Marblehead, MA) an absolutely pristine, extremely well-equipped 1997 Hunter 376. All the goodies - electric windlass, electric halyard winch, factory installed genset, factory installed reverse cycle a/c-heat, freezer, fridge, you get the picture. The biggest added benefit was that it was a 1-owner boat with full documentation of everything done since she rolled out the factory door.

And I can stand fully erect down below!!! No more moving around below like a hunchback!!

I saw it, it saw me, we met minds and it asked-- no, begged-- me to take it home. 'Save me,' it said. So I did.

Boat #1 because I always wanted to sail and the time was right. Eventually Victim of Fate needed many systems replaced/repaired and it beyond my time, financial means and patience/experience level at that moment so I sold her.

After 1 season, I stopped at the marina and had lunch with my old dockmates on the dock, realized how much my life sucked again and found Anam Cara that night (on this website). Saw her the next day, asked the PO what his lowest price would be and it was, ironically, the maximum price I had in mind and next thing you know she was mine (ours!).

I wanted to be a sailor since I was a little kid and became one the minute I had the means and a wife that was willing to come along for the ride!!

I enjoy this thread because it helps me to remember I am not as nuts as people think I am. Sailing provides for me a constant and perfectly accessible stream of learning opportunities and a feeling that I am participating in a pursuit as old as civilization itself even though what I know barely scratches the surface of this ancient art. However, in the middle of the continent where bass and pontoon boats rule, sailing is the outlier of aquatic pursuits and when I'm faced with the question of why I would go through so much work to move across the water I find it impossible to explain the hook, line and sinker effect that the lines of a sailboat have on people like us.

Wanted stand up headroom and a head with room to close the door while seated, but wanted to keep it below 29' to fit in the cheapskate slips. We looked at quite a few boats that all seemed to have major issues. The one we got had easily fixed cosmetic issues and most of the things we wanted. And it was cheaper than the ones we'd rejected for major problems.

What a great thread! Our purchase was all about timing. I have sailed on OPB"s for years, when I mentioned to a workmate that we were dreaming of a boat, he mentioned his in-laws was for sale but not in good shape.( a couple of years idle at anchor) Many hours of labour in the back yard with my brother and daughter with beverage service from my Wife brought our Mac 25 back to fine sailing shape. Nothing looks as good as something you put loving labour into. We are only three years in now so not feeling the 2 foot-itis bug yet.

"Invest in what you value" - I value my family. I can sail, waterski, tow tubes, motor, slide over to a beach and beach it for play, ample room for naps, a bathroom, etc. And if the weather turns bad - I can bolt for home at 16 mph. ;)

The Mac 26X/M models are swiss army knives - they can do a lot of things - none of them as well as a more specialized craft.

I started out with dingy's. We got a 21 venture after getting married, a 23 San Juan on our 2nd anniversery. a couple small boats in between. Last year bought a 31 Hunter 08 that had never been owned. Thoughts were a ten year old boat will be easier to sell. We are both 62 now. Roller furling lets us continue to sail. and the Admiral really likes the Hunter.

Have sailed since a child. My dad had a Tanzer 22 on Lake Winnipesaukee and was an active racer. As a teenager I got a windsurfer and then had a Lightning after college that I sailed on Squam Lake. When I was in high school, my dad moved his boat from Winnipesaukee to the ocean (South Freeport, ME). I remember going up for weekend sails out of the Harraseeket River and sailing the Casco Bay area. He traded up to a Mariner 28. He always wanted a Sabre but could not swing it and always referred to the Mariner as his poor man's Sabre. My dad passed away when I was in college and my mom sold the boat. I sailed my lightning for several years but then sold it and did not sail for many years.
Three years ago my wife and I bought a small camp in Phippsburg, ME, and My ever present desire to have a boat became stronger. I have always been drawn to the old classics., and was actually looking for a small day sailer that was tuff. Looked around for a Sea Sprite 23 but never found one that I was happy with. That and my wife kept telling me that we should wait a year or two. I kept passively looking. Being close to the water did not help the itch. Eventually went and looked at an old ss23 up in Damariscotta. It was an old one in rough shape. My wife was with me, and was not impressed. Sitting next to the Sea Sprite was a Quickstep 24. I had never seen one, or heard of one, but fell in love instantly. My wife actually said " I want that boat". Now I had approval and started looking into the QS 24 and looking for ones for sale. Eventually found an '85 down at the Cape that fit the bill and the rest is History. Had some minor repairs done to it after having it hauled to Maine and got it into the water a week before Irene hit. She rode out the storm on her mooring problem free. I was a wreck She is not big , or the fastest, but she is stable and beautiful and we love her. Looking forward to having our first full season sailing out of the New Meadows River.

Sat out sailing a long time Last fall I got the bug around my 55th birthday. Purchased two sailboats that same day. A Mac 25 and small day sailor. No room to move below in a Mac when you are 6'7" but my wife and I enjoyed sailing a month or so of the remaining season in borrowed slips.

Traded it straight across for a dark blue hull Clipper Marine 32 sloop this spring. . A week later I purchased my dream yacht, a 32 Clipper Marine Aft Cabin Ketch Fin Keel with a center cockpit and Edson helm steering. Had been working on this deal for months and it suddenly came through.

Not many of these William Crealock coastal waters 32's were built and fewer remain available in good condition. My aft cabin is 98% original. Between the two sailboats I have 14 usable sails. Sailing Texas has only listed a couple over many years. My aft cabin model comes with a factory made three axle trailer with surge brakes. I was able to purchase her for the value of the trailer alone.

On my lake, the max sailboat length on the largest dock is 32 feet, so that is what got me looking at 32's.

Why Clipper Marine? It started off as looking for the largest trailer sailor I could find so I could fit below. The CM 32's were among the largest sailboats made to be easily trailersble by the owner without special trailers or permits. I got hooked on the design and ended up with a slip before I purchased the boats. The sloop is the parts donater for the aft cabin to get her to 99%.

My Aft Cabin is due to splash in 10 days. She is at the diesel shop now getting serviced , then bottom paint and a hull buff job. Counting the days!

How much did I want a Clipper Marine 32 Enough to purchase www.clippermarine.org and build a web site to help locate owners and possible seller contacts. . It worked well enough I have two CM32's and a group to share experiences with.

Pictured is the CM 32 aft cabin Ketch, the CM 32 sloop, the Mac 25, my wife Karen and Sugar Bee (Maltese that loves sailing.)

The aft cabin will be named Sugar Bee. First time the boat has been named that we know of in over 35 years.

Thank you William Crealock for all your wonderful yacht designs. Your coastal and blue water yachts are doing well under the tests of time.
