Jibes138, your theory can easily be disproved by any parent or uncle: If you have a couple of gradeschool age kids sitting on your shoulders but you are not falling down, you are in equilibrium, but you are not at rest.
Further, if you are the parent of said kids, you are never at rest no matter what they're doing.

Well when you put the 1 lb weight on equilibrium was broken till the ground responded by being compressed. when you pushed sideways the ground responded with either an increased static friction force or a somewhat lower dynamic friction force and an acceleration .....

By equilibrium I mean the sum of forces is 0 and what ever body is actually being considered can be analyzed with statics techniques.

And, I for one, don't believe in vacuum. Zero point energy clearly shows that the mythical vacuum is full of energy so vacuum is not what I'd call it.:naughty:

Bill , A legitimate question; doesn't a motionless body rest in a state of equilibrium? If I drop a basket ball it will bounce for a time and come to rest, isn't the end condition equilibrium? and when I pick the ball up it changes form a static to a dynamic state?

Technically, picking the ball up just changes the static state...dropping it again turns it into a dynamic situation.

Dan- What difference does it make how large the ship's captain is? Does he increase the draft that much?
(A very large ship's captain has to take into account the extra draft going into a Black Sea port....)
