Why are sails white?

When we were kids learning to sail, we noticed all the Sunfish in the group had colorful sails. Other small boats had colorful sails, too. But the large boats (you know, the ones with the extra sail up front) had white sails. My brothers and I remember our father saying that white sails are a waste of good fabric.

Why are sails white and not colorful?

I think visibility has something to do it too. Have you ever noticed that boat sailing in extreme North (and South) waters generally use red colored sails so they aren't mistaken for an iceberg.

I believe that the main reason is light reflection and less heat absorbtion - Colors can cause degradation over time... White will not fade? just a couple of thoughts... ;o)

Great thought. We have an Oysterman at Wateree Sailing Club in South Carolina with red sails. And no one has ever mistaken him for an iceberg!
