Whose Music Do You Listen To?

I started first listening to Jimmy Buffett (never met a sailor who didn't have at least one Buffett CD) which lead me into sailing, and now I can't get enough time on the water. Sailing changed my life. But I love music too, play in my own band even and when I'm out on the water or driving I need my fix. Not too loud, don't want to drown out Mother Nature's own symphony, but a good song helps add to the moment. Buffett lead me to other "Trop-Rock" performers and I'll name them in no particular order, but I'm always on the lookout for others so I thought I'd ask the question: Whose Music Do You Listen To?
Here are my favourites.
Jimmy Buffett. 'Nuff said. His bandmates solo stuff as well, Mac McAnally, Pete Mayer, Michael Utley...
Jack Mosley. Florida. Sailor, singer, songwriter, understands the need for Time On The Water. Check out his signature song "Small Boats on Big Oceans."
Kelly McGuire. Texas. Sailor, singer, songwriter, boat-broker. 2008 Texas Independant Musician of the Year for his album "Boat in Belize." Another singer who 'Gets It.'
Hugo Duarte. North Carolina. Sailor, singer, songwriter. Ecclectic music range that spans Country, Island, Bluegrass, Blues and Southern Rock. Not a dog amongst them. Present when the Atocha was discovered, check out "Song of the Sea."
There are others. In my humble opinion no boat should be without music, and those I have mentioned above are sailors too with a unique understanding of what draws us to the sea.
Please share your favourites with me. Thanks.

Even at my advanced age I still enjoy the current music, soft, not hard. And I like country too. Being lazy as all get out I just tune the satellite radio to a station and leave it alone. Sometimes I'll pick one of the decade channels, I liked them all starting with the 60's. But mostly it is just the current soft rock channel. If I have guests aboard expecting nautical tunes then I will stick a Buffet CD in.

Yeah, I got a couple of Buffet CDs.

But my favorite minstrals are Eric Stone and Larry Joe Taylor. Eric plays Trop-Rock and so does Larry. But Larry sings about my part of Texas. "Port A to Port B"

I first ran across Eric Stone in Kemah during a street festival there. The wife and I were supposed to be sailing but our plans were changed and we went to Kemah to wander the streets. Bought a CD on the spot.

Larry Joe plays a concert in Port Lavaca every year at the marina. I've danced in the parking lot lots of times. And he sings about places I've actually seen and sailed to. Makes me a little bit biased, I think. :)

boat music

i hap'n to have an ipod with over 20 gigs of music in all genre's. I even have scream rock for my son when aboard but only let him hear 1 or two songs. Mostly i listen to Bob Marle, Buju Banton, and others of the reggae genre as well as Diamond Steel's steel drum music-heard them live in St Lucia. My ipod can suffle for days without hearing the same song twice. Classic rock plays well on the boat as well were i can sing along as loud as i want when i;m out in the deep blue and noone is around!

Depends on the day, but some standards are;
Buffett,
Kelly McGuire,
The Boat Drunks,
Gordon Lightfoot,
James Taylor,
Jack Johnson,
The Subdudes,
Robert Palmer (Sailing Shoes, Sneaking Sally throught the Alley, Hey Julia, not "Addicted to Love")
CSNY and Stephen Stills by himself (Southern Cross and Treetop Flyer - i mean come on ... perfect)

There are many many others but these are just some of the highlights.

Like all kinds.. Buffett, of course.. but lots of other stuff. I REALLY like my 120 gig iPod because I can have all my music on it! Country is fine, Kenny Chesney’s “Luck Old Sun” album is a fine sailing one ! Jack Johnson’s stuff is smooth.. I have smooth jazz like the Rippingtons do.. Paul Hardcastle, Acoustic Alchemy.. Nice.. I like Flaminco .. Jessie Cook and Johannes Linstead.. and of course, Oscar Lopez.. The rowdy beer music here is Zydeco and Cajun French.. and Swamp Pop, like Subdudes, “Behind The Levee”.. Folksey like Mark Knopfler, especially the single “So Far From The Clyde” .. Other stuff like John Meyer, Bruce Hornsby, Dr. John.. Dave Matthews.. LONG list !
Thanks for some more hints, guys !

Here are some songs that I tend to listen to:

Jimmy Buffett (doesn't get much better than that).
Jim Morris (you have to check him out because he is very good, especially the song "Floating Opera" if you sail the Chesapeake Bay).
The Jolly Rogers (Sea Shanties)
The Bilge Pumps (Sea Shanties)
Ed Phillips (he does some sea shanties and his version of "A Whaling Song" is awesome)
Porter and Stout (Sea Shanties)
Gaelic Storm (check out the song "Devil Down Below")
Enya (Very beautiful to listen to while you are sailing)

Of course I listen to other stuff but these are some favorites. Here are some links:

I'll add Nora Jones to the smooth list, great to listen to on a calm early morning sail, same with Jack Johnson.

Reggae: Marley (Bob & Ziggy), Peter Tosh, UB40
Rock: Acoustic Clapton, Eagles, Van Morrison, CSNY
Trop Rock: Eric Stone, Scott Kirby, Michael Mccloud, Jimmy & the Parrots
Love him if you've seen him: Michael Beans, arrgh
Jazz: Ellis Marsalis, Miles Davis, any solo piano, latin jazz
Cuban: Buena Vista Social Club
Buffett: pretty much most of his stuff

Sirus and the MP3 player get a good workout on our boat.

Thanks for this thread, I needed some ideas. Of course I have a good supply of Jimmy, B and although I live and sail in the PNW, his music speaks to me. It is traditional to listen to him first when leaving the dock on a trip, puts the whole boat in the right mood. And thanks for all the suggestions of other Trop Rock. On a hot summers day up here, you can sit back with this music and actually think you are in the tropics. Last May my wife and I had an opportunity to visit a friend in Pensacola for a week. We attended a beach side talent show that was kind of the best of the local bands. We had way too much fun as we were introduced to some great live trop rock. Cheers, Ian

Being a belly dancer I tend to listen to lots of middle eastern music, classic and pop. The cockpit of my Hunter is a great place to practice shimmys while underway! But I am glad I stumbled across this thread. Gives me some ideas of some new stuff I can add to the IPOD!

Where can you order the Zac Brown and Jimmy Buffett stuff in CD or MP3 form? That sounds pretty cool. I watched the CMT show and it was really good with Zac Brown and Jimmy Buffett.

I almost always put on Club Trini (Jimmy's band). When the weather is bad and stormy and I really have my hands full, the wife puts on Ride of the Valkyries (Wagner) just to piss me off.

I must be the only sailor that dislikes Buffett. James Taylor too. I'd rather clean the head after a week of beans than...

Down with JB

Jimmy Buffett definitely got my sailing juices flowing again after a good amount of time away from the water. (Listening to Hey Good Looking as I type this.)

There is another JB I listen to a lot on the boat. I like reggae and found a local band (to the Boston area) name John Brown' Body thanks to my brother-in-law. They are now part of the boat list that includes Buffett, Marley, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Sublime, OAR and some others. I love iPods for boats. One of the greatest things to have onboard.
